Stables in Matlock
Started by Mr William Smith, and now continued by his granddaughter, this exclusive collection of carriages, harnesses and accessories is one of the largest in the country. The collection features the rare surviving Hansom Cabs along with various others including the Stage Coach and the Royal Mail Coach. The carriages featured in this collection are also known to have appeared in films such as Pride and Prejudice.
As a working museum, visitors can often see the carriages being driven on the road – one of the more remarkable features of this museum. Visitors to the museum also have the pleasure of meeting some of the horses that drive the carriages. You can even arrange a short carriage ride whilst visiting.
The carriages are also available to hire for special occasions and the Carriage Museum also offers driving lessons and experiences.

The Red House Stables and Carriage Museum provides bed and breakfast facilities, and is located just a short distance from Matlock and the spa town of Buxton. The bed and breakfast boasts 5 rooms, all of which cater to the differing requirements of guests. With a very traditional feel, the bed and breakfast has been awarded three AA stars. Each room is equipped with towels and dressing gowns which guests may borrow, along with a variety of breakfast options on offer.
The Red House Stables and Carriage Museum is also a certified Caravan Club location, and can also accommodate horses overnight in their stables.
The Red House Stables and Carriage Museum has been welcoming visitors for over sixty years. The working museum makes for a great day out with children, or a very pleasant stay in the Derbyshire countryside.
